NHTSA urges consumers to act immediately in Airbag Recall

Takata Airbag RecallThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is urging owners of certain Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan and General Motors vehicles to act right away to respond to recalls of defective and dangerous airbags made by Takata. You can see if your vehicle is among those currently included in the recall by entering your VIN at https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Takata has found that the defective airbags explode when deployed in an auto accident, which can send metal shrapnel flying toward the seated driver or passenger. It’s possible for the flying metal to cause severe, even life-threatening physical injuries to the neck, face, head and chest. Officials say more vehicle makes and models may be added to the recall in the coming weeks.

According to the New York Times, Honda is prioritizing recall notices for people who live in particularly humid states like Florida. Humidity seems to make the propellant in the airbags more likely to explode. The New York Times also reports that automakers may not have enough replacement parts to repair each recalled vehicle right away.
