Zithromax. Sometimes called Zmax or the Z-pack is an antibiotic commonly used to treat bacterial infections including pneumonia and bronchitis. Zithromax is azithromycin, which is different from amoxicillin and other types of antibiotics. To find out if you have a claim for an injury caused by side effects of Z-pack, please call South Carolina personal injury attorneys McWhirter, Bellinger & Associates, P.A., at 888-353-5513.
Sometimes, Z-pack can be a dangerous drug that clinical studies have linked to life-threatening heart problems and changes to heart rhythm, which can cause arrhythmia and sudden cardiovascular death. Pfizer, the drug company that makes the Z-pack, may have failed to warn doctors and patients of the heart-related dangers of the antibiotic.
In 2012, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at the heart effects of azithromycin. The study found an increased risk of cardiac deaths when the Z-pack was used instead of other antibiotics.
Evidence suggests Zithromax may increase the risk of cardiac death when compared to taking other kinds of antibiotics or taking no antibiotics at all. The study showed the risk may be as much as two times that of the risk associated with amoxicillin, and was greatest for people with existing heart problems As a result, the FDA warned doctors to carefully consider treating patients with the Z-pack if the patients had existing heart conditions. Warnings were not issued for patients without existing heart problems.
If your heart was injured by the Z-pack, or if you lost a loved one because of cardiovascular complications immediately after treatment with the Z-pack, then you deserve compensation for the consequences, such as:
- Medical bills
- Lost wages
- End-of-life expenses, in the event of death
Our dangerous drug attorneys can review the injury you suffered after taking the Z-pack, and determine if you are eligible to pursue compensation.
